Running Injury Prevention

This programme has been adapted specifically for runners from the successful potential Royal Marine recruit programme. Running is an excellent form of exercise both physically and mentally, but like any recreational activity, there is always the risk of injury.

A high proportion of injuries sustained through running are preventable. Injuries usually result from over training or an underlying muscle imbalance that becomes more prominent, and we challenge the muscles more, ultimately leading to pain. the GOOD NEWS, though, is that both of these can be addressed.

Our team of experienced physiotherapists will work with you to develop a comprehensive training and conditioning plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals. We use a variety of techniques to help you maintain optimal physical function and performance. This programme is suitable and tailored to a wide variety of runners, from those starting out with their first 5k, to those looking at running a marathon.

What are common injuries do runners encounter?

Typical injuries we see and can address with runners are:

  • Glute/lateral hip pain

  • Anterior (front) knee pain

  • Achilles pain

  • Foot and ankle pain

  • And many others.

The runners screening programme will look at the following:

  • Hip and lower limb functional movements

  • Lower limb isolated muscle group strength

  • Full lower limb flexibility

  • Ankle stability

  • Single leg control

Our Programme

This programme is suitable for those suffering from a long-term, repetitive or newly developing injury. It is targeted to those looking at preventing an injury from occurring as you increase your running distance.

We can tailor this programme to suit those new to running and more experienced long-distance and marathon runners. Injuries are common in running as you increase training; these become more likely if you progress your training too much too soon, lack joint and tissue mobility, or have underlying weaknesses.

This prevention programme is essential for those looking at long-term running health and those working towards a goal. You can continue running without having to stop for injury or prolonged rest by putting strategies in place.

The programme will include a full assessment looking at the following:

  • Joint mobility

  • Tissue mobility

  • Functional movement patterns

  • Individual muscle strength

  • Single leg control

  • Neural tension

  • Training load & progressions

  • Footwear advice

Based on the screening findings, you will provide an expert individualised rehabilitation programme to follow that fits in with your busy work, life and training schedule to ensure you are as consistent as possible.

What Our Clients Say

I was training for the London Marathon in October 2022, only 8 weeks into training I picked up right shin and left Achilles pain which stopped me running. I rested for 6 weeks and tried running again but the pain returned straight away. I went to see Holly, where she did the runners screening programme. She immediately found the cause of my pain and started me on my strength exercises. We then gradually build up my running as pain allowed. Pleased say to I complete the Marathon in 4 hours 10 mins.
